Floral Arrangements

Like a person, each flower has it’s own individuality. Some floral personalities are suitable to others, while others simply don’t get along.

While a creative touch can help you arranging flowers and bouquets, there are a few materials and basic principles you’ll need to follow in order to make a eye-catching flowery beauty.

What to Keep in Mind when Arranging Floral Centerpieces

  • If you are using a wide variety of blooms and colors, remember that traditionally the smaller and brighter flowers and plants are placed on the edges while the larger and shaded flora should be placed in the centre.
  • Alignment and symmetricity are important factors when arranging flowers. If you are having a formal and organised event, you’ll want to align the flowers perfectly to give a symmetrical pristine impression. Likewise, a casual event would be more suited to a ragged, intentionally ‘wild’ arrangement.

Design your Arrangement to Complement it’s Surroundings

When you are placing the arrangement, keep the room and surroundings in mind. Do you want a harmonious arrangement, or a contrasting piece?

Take into consideration factors and features such as:

Colour: Flower arrangements shouldn’t have complete attention drawn to them, so avoid say a yellow arrangement in a red and black themed function room. Exceptions can be made of course, such as a funeral wreath used as a centrepiece. The flowers should blend in with the surroundings, and subconsciously appeal to guests and friends.

Size: Height, length and width should all be taken into account. A 2 ft. tall vase may look stunning in your own garden, but can look silly and out of place if used at the wrong function.

Expert Floristry: If you need some inspiration or flat out help, contact a florist and explain your event or function to them. They should be more than willing to lend some of their advice – it will most likely benefit them in the future from your positive word of mouth, and they will expect you to trust and buy from them in the future.

Longevity: If your function will take a day or even longer, make sure you’re picking flora which will last the distance. If weather conditions are extreme or you need the flower bouquet there for days, you may want to consider silk flowers instead. They can be more expensive, but can be reused in the future, or even a decoration within your own home.
