Christmas is a time to clean, decorate and celebrate with family and friends. It’s also traditionally a time to get married – ever wonder why so many people are born in September? One of the most common decorations to use around the house and gifts to bring to relatives and friends are Christmas flowers.

What exactly are ‘Christmas Flowers’?

The most common types of flora you’ll find used for Christmas and holiday decorations and marriages are Hellebores and Poinsettias. Both are vibrant flowers which come primarily in red, white and green tinges. If you need to color match to other decorations, they also come in strong blue and purple colors with silver hues.

While these are the key and most popular flowers, you may also want to consider:

  • Holly: Coupled with mistletoes, gives one of the most ‘Christmasy’ feels to your home or function.
  • Mistletoes: Looks gorgeous whether in bloom or not. Coupled with a read bow for a wreath to hang off your door.
  • Pine Fronds: A subtle feature in a bouquet, often added to a Christmas wedding bouquet.
  • Lilies: Not necessarily Christmas orientated, but nevertheless time flowers which can be added for any occasion.

If you are having relatives over, or simply want to boost the festive feel for your family, attaching Christmas flora to the foundations of your house can have a strong holiday effect.

Which colors should I match for my Arrangements and Bouquets?

Keeping in mind that green, white and red are the primary colors of Christmas, you may want to add in a dash of purple or deep blue for a flourish of class.

While there are ‘traditional’ colors to go by, there’s no rule book which says what you have to use for Christmas. If you have a favourite plant, flower or colour which you think would work, don’t hesitate to add it into the arrangement.

What about the Christmas tree?

The tree can often be overlooked as a feature to decorate in flora. A tree decorated in flowers will not only look stunning but be incredibly unique. The only drawback is, the flowers may began to die after several days. This may be fine if you set the tree up right before Christmas day and take it down soon after, but if you’re planning to keep it up for a month or so, you may want to invest in silk flowers instead.
